Meet the team
The Bradford Learning Network (BLN) is part of Bradford Council’s Innovation Services. Established in 2001 following a school led procurement process the BLN provides schools access to fast, filtered and secure internet services enabling them to utilise online resources and technologies effectively within their teaching and learning whilst safeguarding pupils. Based at The Innovation Centre in Little Germany the team work in partnership with Bradford schools to offer a personal service delivering effective technical support. The team do not have a switchboard or call centre, instead they provide their individual email addresses to allow you to build a direct relationship with them. Being based in central Bradford they can provide onsite visits and have expert knowledge of the local market. The BLN team are all CEOP ThinkUKnow trained and are supported by the wider Innovation Service’s online safety specialist consultants.
The Bradford Learning Network offers connectivity to any educational establishment within the UK. Designed specifically for educational use the network can be procured by individual schools, academy chains or trust federations. The BLN utilises Virgin Media’s Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) and offers a choice of connections ranging from 50Mbps up to 1Gbps to suit your educational setting. All sites are installed with an independent, fibre to the premises (FTTP) connection, also known as a leased line, regardless of their geographical location, which ensures that the full amount of bandwidth requested is delivered. The capacity of the network is managed to ensure speed is never limited and, being synchronous, the upload speeds are the same as the download speeds, which is important when using cloud based services. Connections can be upgraded at any point of the contract, negating the need to overpay for connectivity that is not required now but may be needed in the future. IPVPN connectivity allows schools to connect to each other via virtual networks, enabling a secure sharing of data and systems. Bandwidth usage is monitored and reports are available to provide usage and performance data. Core NetworkThe core of the BLN network is scalable up to a 10Gbps capacity with a 3Gbps connection out to the internet and has its own core Domain Name System (DNS) servers with additional core firewalls to provide the network with an extra layer of security. The core network has built-in resiliency with a secondary core firewall, replicated DNS servers and a 3Gbps failover backup connection. All the elements at the core of the network are monitored and managed by Virgin Media and controlled via robust contract service level agreements.Voice over IPThe network is designed to support Voice over IP (VOIP). This is an additional service which is priced dependent upon your specific requirements. Please contact a member of the team to discuss for details of a VOIP solution for your school.Super connected City Voucher schemeA number of suppliers are contacting schools informing them that they are eligible to take part in the ‘Super Connected City’ voucher scheme which pays for the installation of super-fast broadband. Schools are not eligible for connection vouchers as they do not meet the criteria for being a small / medium enterprise.
